Folkestone Jurats

Transcribed by Susan D. Young.
Sources:
1.  Reprints of "Gleanings of the Municipal Records of Folkestone", as reported in various issues of Folkestone Express, Sandgate, Shorncliffe & Hythe Advertiser.
2.  Burials found in the Folkestone Composite Registers, 1635-1846.
The title and role of jurat was permanently abolished across England by the Municipal Corporations Act of 1835. At that point, Folkestone's traditional governance of 12 jurats was replaced by a modern town council consisting of an elected mayor, aldermen, and councillors.  Jurats and commoners served life terms. Vacancies only opened when a jurat died, at which point a new member was elected by a majority vote of the corporation from the existing pool of commoners.  Because Folkestone was a "Corporate Limb" of the Cinque Port of Dover, these jurats held significant administrative, civic, and judicial power.
The list of Jurats here does not contain all of the jurats that ever served as such for Folkestone.  Only the dates that ARE NOT shown as "Ca" are dates of the election of that individual.  The dates preceded by "Ca" were drawn from an entry found in the Composite Register for the burial of the wife or a child of the individual named.
